Summer Term 2026

In Year five this term, through both English and Mathematics, the children will be working on improving their skills and fluency, including their times tables and spelling strategies.

This term, we will continue to use Power Maths to develop mathematical skills. This has proven to be very popular in helping the children to develop confidence in both number and geometry. The children will be continuing to use Power Maths and will be focusing on fractions, decimal numbers, percentages and geometry.  We will also continue with our daily 'Mastering number', which develops fluency and enables the children to make connections across mathematics.

In our English lessons, we will continue to promote the children's love of writing by exploring a wide range of genres linked to ‘The Game’ (based on Jumanji).

This term, we will focus on the following:

  • *Poetry

  • *Persuasive writing

  • *Creative writing (adventure stories)

  • *Non-fiction reports

During the Summer term in RE, the children will be thinking about how Jesus’ teachings help us learn. Richard Atkinson, who is hugely experienced, will be leading ‘Walk through the bible’ weekly. These sessions will encourage lots of discussion and reflection and are thoroughly enjoyable; we are very fortunate that Richard can lead these sessions for us. We will then be exploring what a Pilgrimage is in the second half of the Summer term.

The children will be continuing PE with Lee on a Wednesday and a Friday. He will focus on Athletics and a striking fielding game, such as rounders or cricket. We will also be starting swimming lessons on 30th April at our beautiful Arundel Lido.

In Science this term, children will learn about reversible and irreversible changes.

In Geography this term, children will learn about deserts. Learning about deserts in Year 5 is important because it helps build a broad understanding of the world and key skills across subjects.

Firstly, it develops geographical knowledge. Deserts are extreme environments, so studying them helps students understand climate zones, weather patterns, and how different parts of the Earth compare to where they live.

Secondly, it introduces adaptation and survival. Children learn how plants, animals, and people survive in very hot, dry conditions. This links closely to science, including habitats and adaptation.

Finally, it develops key skills such as map reading, research, comparing environments, and critical thinking - skills that are useful across all subjects.

In History the children's enquiry question is: was the fall of the kingdom of Benin inevitable?

Through PSHE lessons, we will be focusing on core values which we believe are integral to the holistic development of children. These values include being courteous and tactful. The children will also consider what makes a positive role model and people who inspire them. The children will have many open discussions within these lessons. As always, the children will be given the opportunity to express their personal views and opinions, developing their own personal character across the whole curriculum.

All lessons will be age appropriate and focus mainly on the importance of positive relationships.

Through our creative Art lessons, we will be designing pieces of Architecture linked to our modern world, whilst considering how we can be economical.

The children will also have weekly Music and French lessons with our specialist teachers.

We know that it will be an exciting term ahead, and are really looking forward to immersing the children in many opportunities to broaden their knowledge and understanding.
