Summer Term 2026

Rainbow Class Information Booklet – Summer Term

The summer term has now arrived, and we are sure the children will be ready to come back to school. We have many exciting and interactive lessons prepared and are looking forward to teaching the children.

In English this term, our key texts will be Little Red Riding Hood and Mr Gumpy’s Outing. The children will be learning to write letters accurately, write their names, and compose simple phrases and sentences. In reading, they will focus on reading books that match their phonics group and recognising ‘Red’ words. It is very important that you try to read with your child daily and record it on the Digital Reading Log.

In Maths, we will be focusing on subitising, composition, counting, ordinality, and cardinality. These skills will help the children develop a deeper understanding of numbers and how they relate to one another.

In Science, our Life Cycles unit will explore the life cycles of a butterfly and a frog, discussing the changes they go through. In our Floating and Sinking unit, the children will create boats that float, experimenting with different materials and designs.

In Geography, we will be learning about how the UK is different from other countries. The children will compare and contrast the UK with other parts of the world to develop a sense of place and global awareness.

In History, our key enquiry question is: What was Arundel like before we had cars? The children will look at what people used before cars and explore transport through time, comparing and contrasting it with transport we see today.

In Design and Technology, the children will explore what is meant by ‘waterproof’, ‘floating’, and ‘sinking’. They will experiment and make predictions with various materials, carrying out tests to see which ones work best. They will also learn about the different features of boats and ships before investigating their shapes and structures to build their own models.

In Art and Design, we will explore how the world is full of textures and materials that can be used as surfaces for artwork. The children will learn how to transform these surfaces using line, colour, and shape, and how to make the objects they decorate reflect their personality.

In RE, we will be exploring which places are special and why, as well as which stories are special and why.

In PSHE, we will be discussing the topic of ‘Relationships’. The children will learn how to make friends and how to solve friendship problems when they occur. Later in the term, we will discuss ‘Change’, preparing the children for their transition to Year 1.

In Music, the children will develop their understanding of the building blocks of music by engaging with Melody for Play.

In French, we will be exploring Le navet énorme and La chasse à l’ours.
